Panasonic 3DO [1993]
The Panasonic 3DO was a good console, but just didn't last in the main stream. This was due to poor marketing and the idea of letting other companies such as Sanyo to produce the system as well. The 3DO never recovered from its initial reputation as being designed for a 'rich man'. This was very unfortunate as the 3DO could have provided decent competition against the PlayStation, Jaguar, Saturn or even later consoles.
They also introduced the system as a home multimedia device for the 'family' (watch, learn and play) and for this reason the majority of gamers found it not very appealing.
Unfortunately, many accessories never made passed the prototype stage. Most notable was the memory card add-on, the modem and the massively promoted 64-bit M2 system upgrade.
VERDICT |
The 3DO was designed well before its time but never took off as it should have done. |
