Nintendo Famicom [1983]
Nintendo NES [1985]
"Its graphics were far superior to any home-based console that had come before it, leaving gamers with the feeling that their homes had been transformed into real-life arcades."
Nintendo.com
The NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) was the first ever console made by Nintendo. The Famicom (Family computer) was Nintendo's original NES that was strictly sold only in Japan. This followed the first consoles made post-crash, preceding for example the Atari systems (2600 VCS).
It was an instant hit with console fans and started the trend for video games. The graphics were well ahead of systems before it with 2 Kb of VRAM which ran off an 8-bit processor.
Its main rival was Sega's Master System which was released a year later where there was fierce competition.
VERDICT |
| Set the standard for game consoles and started the 'craze' for the years that followed. |
