Firstly,
as you can see from the size comparison opposite, the Wii is substantially smaller than its competitors. It should also be noted that the Wii is so different to the
PS3 and Xbox 360 that making a like-for-like comparison
is somewhat difficult, although there are some important
distinguishing features that need to be made if deciding
on buying the Wii or one of the other two.
The PlayStation 3 is the best system as a whole, having
a console and Blu-ray player built-in, but is too expensive to
justify its functionality. Until Blu-ray becomes a movie-watching
standard, the Blu-ray player functionality will not
be used to its max at the moment. However, considering all
the components inside, it is a bargain if you compare
it to Blu-ray players on their own (£400-£1000).
The Xbox 360 however, is near on par with the PS3 although
without the next generation of movie format (HD-DVD
movie disc in this case) compatible without buying the
additional player. Xbox 360 also has the advantage of
the highly rated Xbox LIVE to connect online to play
against anyone anywhere in the world, at a charge of
£39.99 a year. The PS3 however, has a free online
service (although downloading files will cost).
The Wii is a ground-breaking console that will change
the course of gaming for years to come, with its Wiimote
gives a bit of exercise for the armchair gamer. The
Wii is great value if the games and the controller appeal
to you, a very good alternative to the other power-strong
consoles. Although I would be aware that the level of
graphics is less than the other two, which can put you
off. |
